Concerned About a Potential Coastal Surge Event?

Compare your home to NOAA's Extratropical Water Level Guidance to determine if you need barriers and the minimum barrier height.

1. Select a Location.

2. Select a Home Elevation. The Home Elevation references the elevation where the items you care about are located (e.g., garage, lowest elevation of machinery, or equipment servicing the building). This can be found on your FEMA flood certificate or Google Earth as an approximation. More information can be found here.

3. Review Summaries and Graphs:

  • WATER ELEVATIONS: Observed (blue circles), Forecasted (blue X's), and Home Elevation (red dashed line). If the blue water line reaches the red dashed line, consider barriers. Data Source: NOAA's Extratropical Water Level Guidance
  • BARRIER HEIGHT: Calculated minimum barrier heights based on Observed (black circles) and Forecasted (black X's) water levels. Negative values indicate water line will be less than your home elevation
  • Data updates every hour.
  • If the blue water line reaches the red dashed line, consider barriers.
  • 4. User Responsibility: Users are responsible for their own actions, property, and how this information is used. NOAA nor TropicalDefense is not responsible.

    Graph zones:

    • Red Zone: Barriers are required.
    • Green Zone: Barrier need not anticipated however this is ultimately the user's decision.
