Concerned About a Potential Coastal Surge Event?

Barrier Status by Location and Elevation
Review the minimum barrier height needed for your location based on NOAA's Extratropical Water Level Guidance.

1. Select a Location. Choose your coastal location from the dropdown menu to view the barrier height requirements specific to that area. The table displays requirements for various home elevations.

2. Review the Table:

  • HOME ELEVATION: Elevation where items you care about are located (e.g., garage, lowest elevation of machinery).
  • MINIMUM BARRIER HEIGHT: Calculated barrier height (in feet) based on the maximum water level compared to the elevation, at the time of peak surge. Data Source: NOAA's Extratropical Water Level Guidance

3. User Responsibility: Users are responsible for their own actions, property, and how this information is used. NOAA nor TropicalDefense is not responsible.

Table zones:

  • Red Zone (Barrier Required): Barriers are required.
  • Yellow Zone (Water within 1 foot): Water level is close to your home elevation.
  • Green Zone (No Barrier Needed): Barrier need not anticipated, however this is ultimately the user's decision.
